Happy National Sons and Daughters Day: Treasuring Every Season
Happy National Sons and Daughters Day! 💕
Somewhere between holding their little hands and watching them grow, the years quietly slip by.
One day, you are helping them put on their shoes, cutting their sandwiches into tiny pieces, answering a thousand questions, and wondering whether bedtime will ever come. Then somehow, almost without noticing, those little hands grow bigger. Their voices change. Their interests change. They begin forming their own opinions, discovering their own gifts, and becoming more and more of the people God created them to be.
And you find yourself wondering:
How did we get here so quickly?
The Days Can Feel Long, but the Years Are Short
When our children are little, it can sometimes feel as though a season will last forever.
There are toys scattered across the floor, laundry that never seems to end, snacks to prepare, places to be, lessons to teach, questions to answer, and countless little interruptions throughout the day.
In the middle of all that ordinary life, it is easy to forget that these are the days we will someday remember.
The fingerprints on the window.
The shoes left in the middle of the floor.
The bedtime stories.
The sleepy hugs.
The laughter coming from another room.
The conversations in the car.
The traditions that seem so ordinary today.
Someday, many of those little everyday things may become some of our most treasured memories.
Every Season Brings Something Beautiful
There is something beautiful about every stage of raising a son or daughter.
The baby years bring tiny fingers wrapped around ours.
The childhood years bring imagination, curiosity, scraped knees, homemade drawings, and endless questions.
The middle years bring growing independence, changing interests, deeper conversations, and glimpses of the person they are becoming.
And as our children continue to grow, our relationship with them grows too.
Parenthood changes right along with them.
We slowly move from doing nearly everything for them to walking beside them—encouraging them, guiding them, praying for them, listening to them, and sometimes learning when to give them room to find their own way.
There can be a little ache in watching childhood disappear.
But there is also tremendous joy in getting to know the wonderful person who is emerging.
Treasure the Ordinary Moments
We often think the biggest memories will come from vacations, birthdays, holidays, and special celebrations.
And of course, those moments matter.
But so much of family life is built in the ordinary.
A cup of coffee while someone tells you about their day.
A joke that makes everyone laugh at the dinner table.
A ride in the car.
A walk around the neighborhood.
A movie on the couch.
A quiet conversation before bed.
A hug for no particular reason.
Those moments may not look important while they are happening, but together they become the story of a family.
We don’t have to make every day extraordinary.
Sometimes we simply need to be present enough to notice the beauty already there.
Let Them Know You See Them
National Son’s and Daughter’s Day is a sweet reminder to tell our children—whether they are five, fifteen, thirty-five, or sixty-five—how much they mean to us.
Tell them you love them.
Tell them you are proud of them.
And tell them what you admire about the person they are becoming.
Listen when they want to talk.
Laugh with them.
Take the picture.
Give the hug.
Say the words.
Life moves quickly, and love should never be something we assume people already know.
Sometimes they need to hear it.
The Years Keep Moving
There is no way to stop time.
We cannot keep our children little forever, and I don’t think we are supposed to.
Our job is to love them through each season and eventually watch them step more fully into their own lives.
That can be bittersweet.
We miss the little person they once were while being incredibly grateful for the person standing in front of us today.
Maybe that is one of the strange and beautiful things about being a parent.
We are always holding several versions of our children in our hearts at once.
We still remember the baby.
And we remember the little child.
We see who they are today.
And we wonder about the person they will become tomorrow.
We love them through all of it.
A Little Reminder for Today 💕
So today, on National Son’s and Daughter’s Day, take a moment to appreciate your children exactly where they are in their story.
You don’t need a perfect celebration.
Maybe you send a text.
Maybe you make their favorite meal.
And maybe you look through old photographs together.
Maybe you sit on the porch and talk.
Maybe you simply give them an extra-long hug.
Because somewhere between holding their little hands and watching them grow, the years quietly slip by.
From the children they once were to the wonderful people they are becoming, every season is a gift—and every moment is worth treasuring.
And perhaps one of the greatest gifts of parenthood is realizing that while childhood doesn’t last forever, love keeps growing right along with them. 💕🌸✨
